Public Participation

Public MeetingsPublic Participation allows you, the citizen, to be involved in the State of Georgia’s Air Quality Permitting and Rule-Making processes.

The Permitting Process:
Industries in Georgia must obtain permits from EPD prior to construction of any plants or equipment that may contribute to the region's air pollution problem during the course of their operations. Public participation during the permitting process allows citizens to make official comments that pertain to air quality as it relates to an industry seeking a permit.

The Rule-Making Process
All proposed air quality rules must go through a public participation process. All proposed rules require that a Public Notice be published in the affected area's newspaper and that a Public Hearing be held in accordance with the laws associated with rulemaking. However, depending on the nature and the impact of the proposed rule, the public participation process may also consist of a series of public meetings or open houses, or could be as detailed as a series of stakeholder meetings.
